"Noble Barns" Harley Jensen & David Leaf.
Harley Jensen and David Leaf, have been friends and colleagues for many years. And this showing in our gallery is a special treat for the viewer, and for the artists.Beginning with Harley’s photographs of what he calls “noble barns” and other rural structures, primarily in western Sonoma County, David has then painted superb watercolors of those same barns – interpreting them in his own special way. Harley wants to record images of these buildings even if the actual buildings are sometimes in decay and are not likely to be preserved. David has taken inspiration from Harley’s photographs while making his own compositional choices. Now in his nineties, David has self-published two books of the watercolor images he creates based on photographs that inspire him.
Harley Jensen is a Bay Area native who has spent most of his creative life as an architect. A Cal-Berkeley graduate who studied under architect Charles Moore, he is founding partner of Jensen/Ptaszynski Architects. He has left his mark on the North Coast at The Sea Ranch through the many houses produced by his firm. Photography is Harley’s other avocation. An architect's eye is evident in his photography. Harley
captures unexpected vistas and details in his camera lens.
David Leaf is also a Cal-Berkeley graduate. He worked with Joseph Esherick in the early 1950s and later with Gardner Dailey. He then moved to Rome for three years to work for Aramco Overseas Co. David fell in love with the city. His work in the U.S. has remained influenced by his time in Rome. In this country he worked as a partner with Reynolds and Chamberlain Architects and Hirsh Morton (later Morton/Jensen Architects). David’s affinity for watercolor is a long and ardent one. He works mostly from photographs now that his mobility is diminished.
