Design: A Way of Life
Lu and Maynard Lyndon met in 1971 at Design Research (D/R), the store many consider to have been the first modern design store in America. They soon developed a close working (and then personal) relationship which has carried forward to the present day. They are a good team--combining design and business talents with a shared vision of appreciating things done well.
Their backgrounds, individually and together, encompass design, product development and retail management positions at Forms+Surfaces, Creative Playthings, Colorform, Placemakers and D/R.
In 1978 Lu and Maynard opened their first Placewares store in Concord, MA, focussing on 'storage and organization,' a merchandising category that had not previously existed. In 1983 they founded LyndonDesign, a product design firm.
After 26 years (and seven store locations in Massachusetts) the Lyndons closed down the Boston-area Placewares stores and returned 'home' to Northern California. In 2005 they opened a new store in the small coastal town of Gualala, near their Sea Ranch home. Placewares+LyndonDesign, as their new store and art gallery is called, is focused on design and art for the home.
