Andrew Vallée | Works in Wood

Placewares is pleased to present the California debut of Northwest artist Andrew Vallee. Andrew grew up in New Hope, Pennsylvania, near the studios of renowned furniture maker George Nakashima, who has greatly influenced Andrew’s work and philosophy. His wood sculpture has been exhibited at multiple museums in the Northwest.

Andrew says of his work: “Often the most beautiful pieces of a slab of wood are cut off and discarded. Those are the pieces I look for and salvage. They are the knots, the burls and the end cuts – the difficult parts of the tree to work with. I collect these pieces, culled by industry and efficiency, and use them for my small-scale sculptures. Like people, the most difficult ones are also the most interesting.”
