Inspired by Melting Ice

Inspired by the melting ice in Lapland, Wirkkala originally created the surface in the 1960s after carving into a graphic mold. An exclusive design reflecting the thousands of hours spent perfecting the glass-blowing technique required to
produce the effect. The patterns gradually change as the glass burns the surface of the wooden molds.

Designed by a Glass Master

A versatile genius synonymous with Finnish design, Tapio Wirkkala’s contributions to the world of functional art include everything from elegant glassware to the design of banknotes. During his world-renowned career, Wirkkala earned a vast array of awards, including three gold medals at the Triennale in Milan in 1951 and another three in 1954.
