At Placewares, we love the saturated colors and bold graphics that emerge from these classic Ghanan basekts.
Colorful Bolga market baskets get their name from the region of Ghana where abundant beta vera grass is woven to create these hardy, useful African baskets. The leather wrapped handle adds durability. Bolgatanga Market Baskets or "Tehei" are exclusively woven by the indigenous Gurune (also known as Frafra) people around the town of Bolgatanga in Northern Ghana.
This basket takes about 3 days to make. Some shapes and patterns are more difficult to weave and take longer. These baskets are fair traded so the crafts people receive fair compensation for their work. Many of the weavers are women and the extra income helps provide daily necessities for their families. While farming is their primary income, basket weaving helps produce income during the dry season.
The usefulness of these baskets is endless! We use our market baskets at the farmers market, stylishly organizing home and office, garden harvesting and mushroom hunting
